The first works that seemed mine were large expressive oil portraits and portrait heads in pastel. I did city views and landscapes, then about ten years ago began to add figures back in- neighbors at a backyard party, visitors to an aquarium. Now I’ve returned to portraits. I work from my own photos and aim for a convincing likeness, but the narrative, emotional content and quality of the paint are more important. The reasons a scene speaks to me can be elusive, but in each case it’s as if my eye falls in love. I want to hang on to that moment. It’s a human thing, and if I get it right, other people can feel what I fell for.
