Seen from the air, things familiar on earth’s surface become puzzling glyphs that convey unremitting, if not always legible, human design on the landscape. My multipart paintings zoom out from geological survey maps to blunt grid-like patterns suggested by urban and industrial configurations. Disassembled and reassembled all wrong, the black grids are a shaky attempt to bind the whole together: ground, formal composition–the world in general. My recent work, including more from this series as well as ceramic sculpture, is posted at https://www.instagram.com/carolieparker/ . Aerial Sweep (acrylic, charcoal, watercolor & wax on paper)
