Cathy Lightfoot’s current work is inspired by tail and brake lights she observes during bumper to bumper commutes at dawn and dusk along LA freeways. For Lightfoot, brake lights signal their caution through pairs of intricately, almost psychedelically engineered “eyes” that brim with fear and anxiety from the anthropomorphized rear panels of innumerable makes and models. She reconstructs her favorite finds with the aid of graph paper and templates on handmade Japanese paper. Lightfoot is a professor at Otis College of Art and Design.
