I was born and raised in LA and started painting as a teenager before turning to photography, writing, and back again to painting. My portraits are explorations the psyche. I use narrative in representation and actual text to expose on a level that is almost uncomfortable. It’s personal, embarrassing, feminine. There is no hiding behind abstraction. They are naked not nudes. I’m rooted in realistic depiction though I want to use realism to highlight the concept not simply show technique. Some aspects are abstract, weak, unrealistically depicted, painstakingly rendered, or merely sketched out. There is no attempt to ground them, they float in space, outlined, turning them into obvious, sticker-like commodified representations.
