Janice Caswell

My work begins with structures in the manmade landscape, in particular those that surprise and perplex me, that seem somehow peculiar, awkward, or incongruous. My eyes are drawn to seemingly unremarkable details: haphazardly patched roofs, mismatched sidewalk tiles, the outline of a former doorway long plastered over. My constructions are an amalgam of the thousands of such objects I have encountered, photographed, and filed away. As I work, I delve into this mental library, combining angles, patterns, textures, colors, and plays of light and shadow in an intuitive, improvisational process.
