Los Angeles based artist, Leigh Salgado, works with the labor intensive process of cutting paper by hand in order to create paintings and drawings that have texture and dimensionality. Both figurative and abstract elements make up the imagery. Her work includes an ongoing interest in subjects and forms that she associates with her development during girlhood and womanhood and makes use of forms and imagery that is generally linked with the feminine or “girlishness.” This is motivated by a belief in “girl power,” rather than associations of weakness, diminishment or triviality that is sometimes associated with “girly” things.
