Nicholette Kominos

My mixed-media constructions explore the shift between the flat, illusory qualities of painting, and the attributes of remembrance and gravity inherent to sculpture. Often within each piece, I play with dichotomies, various degrees of delicacy, and asymmetrical balance. Materiality is a critical factor in my work; having been influenced by the second-wave of feminism and the Arte Povera movement, I experiment with domestic and industrial materials to evoke memories and psychological associations. Additionally, my experiences teaching art to children and families has engendered a more spontaneous approach to my process.
