My art career started with creative writing- researching and experimenting with the idea that abstract art has a knowable and communicable vocabulary. In 2000 I coined this term to describe my work and that of other artists working in similar ways:blackstraction (blak-strak’ sh-n) n. 1. the objectification of painting 2. an emotive non-representational work of art stressing formal internal relationships using African/American/Asian art practices at times employing craft techniques and three dimensional presentation. blackstractionist n. an artist engaging therein. Now, I make material-based objects that embody social and/or aesthetic ideas.
