My journey back to representational painting, after many years of making assemblage and collages, happened organically. The first photos I began referencing for paintings were casual, taken without any intention to paint from them. In my previous work, I was making pieces with fabrics that had been gifted to me by women in my circles and community. Painting on some of those fabrics began a process of experimenting with the limits of each material while letting paint be paint. In the case of Zoe, the image was also gifted by artist Sophie Kahn of her daughter, a young artist herself, during an eye exam.
