Marisa J. Futernick is a Los Angeles-based artist and writer who uses photography, text, video, installation, painting, artist’s books, and radio to examine the less visible social and political histories of the United States. Combining text and image, Futernick weaves together archival and field research with fictional storytelling, often using her own voice or physical body to subvert gender stereotypes. Her invented narratives blend the personal with the historical, imbuing rigorous investigation with humor and tenderness in an effort to understand what America is.
