A fifth-generation educator from Washington, DC, Dr. Lawton’s artwork is grounded in social practice, seeking to illuminate contemporary issues, cultural traditions, and the stories of people impacted by them. Her teaching and scholarship revolve around visual narrative and intergenerational arts learning in BIPOC community settings. Lawton earned a BA degree in Studio Art and Sociology, University of Virginia; an MFA in Printmaking, Howard University; and an EdDCTA from Teachers College, Columbia University. Honors include a Fulbright Distinguished Chair at the University of Edinburgh, associate artist at the Tate Exchange in London.
